K20 ditches the road, with launch of Gravel Section

K20 riders took part in a skills session to mark the launch of the club’s Gravel Section.

With the guidance of British Cycling coach, Charlie Codrington, the founder of Hidden Tracks Cycling, the group learned the skills needed to stay on their bikes on slippery slopes and hills and even how to get over obstacles.

“We had a great day. Descending on gravel was daunting at first but after a few attempts and with helpful guidance being offered, our confidence grew”, says K20’s Paul Heather. “Riding the berms and trails in the woods was great fun.  We all gained something from the session: for me it was changing weight distribution when climbing to stop wheel spin.”

“Gravel biking uses mountain biking skills as well as road”, says Gravel Co-ordinator Jon Hawker. “These skills are highly transferable, making us better bike handlers not just on gravel but on the road too.  Anyone who wants to try gravel is welcome to join us for our future rides - on roads, trails and tracks.  We are going to have a lot of fun.”

The Gravel Section aims to have a monthly ride to put their new skills to the test.
